The latest parish registration numbers are in: electric vehicle adoption isn’t slowing down. Growth remains steady across Louisiana, expanding in major cities and regional communities alike.

Statewide Snapshot

As of the September 2026 reporting period, Louisiana now has 27,430 registered electric vehicles (battery-electric and plug-in hybrid combined).

Key takeaways:

  • EV registrations increased from 22,695 in August to 27,430 in September (the significant jump was due to an updated list)
  • Since last August (2025), Louisiana has experienced a 16.9% increase in overall EV ownership and a 22.8% increase in monthly adoption compared to the previous year.
  • Louisiana’s EV adoption continues to grow, roughly between 210 and 250 new vehicles per month

What Changed Since August?

The September report continues the pattern of a steady monthly increase observed throughout the middle of 2026.

Only a few parishes saw minor drops, around one to three vehicles, which were likely due to routine registration adjustments.

Metropolitan Areas Continue EV Expansion

Louisiana’s largest population centers remain the top drivers for EV adoption. This concentration in urban centers is largely driven by higher population densities, greater availability of public charging infrastructure, and localized clean-transportation initiatives.

Several metropolitan parishes posted the largest monthly increases in September:

  • East Baton Rouge Parish: +34 EVs
  • Orleans Parish: +32 EVs
  • Jefferson & St. Tammany Parish(es): +18 EVs

Jefferson Parish
Still Takes the Lead with the Most Registrations in the State.

Notably, Orleans Parish stands out with an EV ownership percentage of 1.51%.

Louisiana Continues EV Growth

Louisiana's electric vehicle market has demonstrated strong, multi-year momentum, with total EV registrations climbing from just 1,220 in December 2017 to over 27,430 by September 2026. As shown in the chart, both Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) have seen steady, upward expansion. BEVs continue to lead statewide adoption, accounting for over 15,000 registered vehicles (nearly 66% of the total), while PHEVs account for more than 7,800 registrations. This sustained upward trend reflects a growing commitment to electric mobility and clean transportation across the state.

Why This Data Matters

By tracking EV registrations by parish, communities and utilities can pinpoint where adoption is thriving and where charging networks need a boost. The pattern across Louisiana is clear: local access drives EV adoption. Targeted infrastructure planning plays a crucial role in accelerating clean transportation adoption across all communities.
