Louisiana EV Adoption: What The January Parish Level Data Tells Us

Louisiana’s EV market continued its steady climb in January 2026, surpassing 21,000 registered electric vehicles statewide, and the latest parish-level data show that growth is becoming both more consistent and more geographically concentrated.

Metro Areas Continue to Drive Adoption

The state’s largest and most urban parishes remain the engines of EV growth:

  • Jefferson Parish now leads the state with 3,541 EVs, reflecting its large population base, higher household incomes, strong dealer presence, and proximity to New Orleans’ charging infrastructure.
  • Orleans Parish continues to stand out with the highest EV penetration rate (1.38% of all registered vehicles) and one of the fastest growth rates in the state.
  • East Baton Rouge Parish added EVs steadily through 2025 and into January 2026, reaching nearly 2,800 registered EVs, reinforcing its role as a statewide adoption anchor.

Together, these parishes illustrate a clear pattern: higher population density, shorter daily trip lengths, and better access to charging correlate strongly with higher EV adoption.

Suburban Growth Is Broadening the Market

Suburban parishes such as St. Tammany, Ascension, Livingston, Lafayette, and St. Charles continue to show strong and reliable growth. These areas tend to support a mix of BEVs and PHEVs, reflecting commuter lifestyles where drivers want electric miles for daily travel with flexibility for longer trips.

Notably:

  • St. Tammany Parish surpassed 2,090 EVs in January, maintaining one of the strongest growth trajectories in the state.
  • Ascension and Livingston Parishes continue to post consistent month-over-month increases, signaling growing comfort with EV ownership outside core urban centers.

Rural Parishes: Smaller Numbers, Steady Progress

Rural parishes still account for a smaller share of total EV registrations, but the data show gradual, persistent growth rather than stagnation. In these areas, EV adoption remains modest, and PHEVs continue to play an important role as a transitional technology where charging access is more limited and driving distances are longer.

While individual parish totals remain low, the steady increases suggest that infrastructure availability—not lack of interest—is the primary constraint.

BEVs Continue to Pull Ahead

Across nearly every parish type, battery-electric vehicles are gaining share. This aligns with the statewide trend: improved vehicle range, falling costs, and expanding public charging are making fully electric vehicles practical for more Louisiana drivers, particularly in metro and suburban areas.

What We’re Watching Next

As Louisiana moves further into 2026, the data suggest a market that is no longer defined by spikes and stalls, but by incremental, dependable growth—with urban leaders, suburban momentum, and rural opportunity shaping the next phase of EV adoption statewide.
