I-20 and I-49 Corridor Clean Transportation Workshops

Louisiana Clean Fuels recently wrapped up a three-part I-20 and I-49 Corridor Clean Transportation Workshop series designed to bring local stakeholders together to explore clean transportation fuel technologies, utility collaboration, and the policies shaping the future of sustainable mobility in our state. These events, held between February and June, offered tailored sessions in West Monroe, Lafayette, and Shreveport, each addressing unique regional insights and challenges.
The first workshop took place on a chilly February 19 at the Ike Hamilton Expo Center in West Monroe. Despite icy roads and frigid temperatures, local officials, fleet managers, and utility representatives gathered to discuss alternative transportation fuels. The event emphasized updates to electric vehicle infrastructure, explored the possibility of reviving the region’s CNG corridor, and hosted a community listening session. Featured speakers Kevin Bart of Entergy Louisiana and Robert Cone of Kenworth Truck Company shared insights on energy resilience and the role of electric and alternative fuel trucks. A vehicle showcase rounded out the event, giving attendees a close-up look at the latest clean transportation options.
On March 11, the conversation continued at the Louisiana Solar Energy Lab (LaSEL) in Lafayette. This workshop spotlighted gaseous fuels such as compressed and renewable natural gas (CNG/RNG) and propane. A key component of this session focused on how communities can work proactively with local utilities to plan and install EV charging infrastructure. Attendees also enjoyed a guided tour of the solar research facility, gaining insights into how renewable energy intersects with transportation electrification. Another hands-on vehicle display showcased a range of medium-duty alt-fuel options.
The series concluded on June 12 in Shreveport, hosted at the SporTran City Facilities. This final event built upon the themes of the earlier workshops while also addressing emerging policy concerns, including the potential impact of a shifting political climate on alternative fuel tax credits. Discussions were enriched by insights from Dinero Washington of SporTran, Richard Biedenharn of Cleco, and returning speaker Robert Cone from Kenworth. Topics included the commercial trucking industry’s transition to lower-emission technologies, changing emissions standards and the status of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure plan. The day included a tour of SporTran’s state-of-the-art public transit facility and it’s the future home of an Amtrak intermodal station. A clean vehicle showcase capped off the event.
Throughout the series, one theme stood out—the importance of collaboration. From local governments to energy providers, everyone has a role to play in building a cleaner, more resilient transportation network. These events helped spark critical conversations, build new partnerships, and lay the groundwork for future progress in Louisiana’s clean fuels transition.
