A Need to Redefine Class 8 Long-Haul Trucking

February 2025 - The trucking industry is comprised of a variety of duty cycles and a wide range of truck sizes. And even the Class 8 truck market is not homogenous as it includes both highway tractors and local trucks. Sixty-five percent of the heavy-duty truck market is highway tractors, according to ACT Research. Sleepers, which are what people think of when they think of long-haul trucking, account for 60% of tractor production with day cabs making up the other 40%.

While it can be difficult to find common language within the trucking industry when it comes to defining and discussing long haul, as we move through trucking’s Messy Middle it is important that we use standard language and descriptions when discussing length of haul.

NACFE’s white paper, A Need to Redefine Class 8 Long-Haul Trucking, offers some definitions of long haul, believing that it includes both over-the road and return-to-base operations. The increase in return-to-base operations in longer hauls will help fleets to locate their truck fuel or charging for alternative fueled vehicles.
