Louisiana Sustainable Projects Funded by DOE Grants

Two large projects have been funded by DOE grants in recent months, focusing on battery capacity and availability. Advancing battery capacity and production technology in the United States is crucial for fostering sustainable growth in the electric vehicle (EV) industry. Enhanced battery efficiency and domestic manufacturing capabilities reduce reliance on imports, lower production costs, and minimize the environmental impact of supply chains. By improving energy density and recycling technologies, the U.S. can extend EV range and lifespan while reducing waste. Furthermore, a robust battery industry supports job creation, strengthens energy independence, and accelerates the transition to renewable energy sources, positioning the nation as a global leader in sustainable innovation.


Phase 3 Expansion of Syrah’s Commercial-Scale Natural Graphite Active Anode Material Facility in Vidalia, Louisiana 

  • Recipient: Syrah Technologies LLC 
  • Location: Vidalia, Louisiana 
  • Award: $219,820,610 
  • Project Description: This project aims to expand its production capacity of active anode material (AAM) using natural graphite from Mozambique. This expansion will make it the only vertically integrated, large-scale natural graphite AAM producer outside China and the first in the USA, thereby supporting the growing demand from U.S.-based lithium-ion battery manufacturing. 
     

Lithium Hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6) Manufacturing Plant in St. Gabriel, Louisiana 

  • Recipient: Kuora 
  • Award: $100,000,000 
  • Location: St. Gabriel, Louisiana 
  • Project Description: This project aims to create the first U.S. plant for LiPF6 in St. Gabriel, Louisiana, addressing a critical supply chain risk for domestic lithium-ion battery production. This plant will produce up to 10,000MT of LiPF6 annually, supporting over a million electric vehicles and reducing reliance on costly Asian imports.
