Electric vehicles (EVs) are rapidly gaining popularity across the United States, and Louisiana is no exception. As environmental concerns and fuel efficiency drive more people toward hybrid and electric options, there’s a growing interest in tracking the number of electric vehicles on the road. One reliable way to determine how many EVs are present in a state like Louisiana is through Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) registrations. In this blog post, we'll explore how VIN data can be used to identify the number of electric vehicles in Louisiana and why this approach is so effective.
Identifying EVs in Louisiana Using VIN registrations
Louisiana Clean Fuels is able to determine the number of EVs in Louisiana by Parish using the VIN registrations from the State. To do so, our team processes the 17 character codes and uses a "decoder" to identify which are electric vehicles. Personal information about the vehicle owner is confidential and is not included in the dataset we receive each month, nor are there any addresses - only city codes or zip codes for each vehicle. Utilizing the data we are provided, our team can extract the following information:
- Manufacturer
- Model Year
- Place of Manufacture
- Engine Type
- Vehicle Type
Total EVs in Louisiana
Updated October 2024
| Car Type | Count |
| Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) | 8,836 |
| Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) | 4,057 |
| TOTAL COUNT | 12,893 |
Why This Data is Important
Tracking the number of electric vehicles in Louisiana through VIN registrations provides critical insights for various stakeholders:
- State Policymakers: Knowing how many electric vehicles are on the road helps shape policies around infrastructure development, such as the need for more charging stations.
- Environmental Analysts: Understanding the growth in EV adoption helps assess progress toward reducing carbon emissions and meeting environmental targets.
- Businesses: Auto dealers, charging station operators, and electric utility companies can benefit from understanding the growth trajectory of EVs in Louisiana. For example, utilities can use this data to forecast electricity demand, while charging station operators can pinpoint locations where EV adoption is highest.
- Consumers: This data can offer valuable information for potential EV buyers, showing the popularity and feasibility of driving an electric vehicle in Louisiana.
