Alternative Fuel Prices in Louisiana

Written by: Elizabeth Linehan

Updated: March 2023

Using data collected from 65 alternative fuel stations across Louisiana, we are able to track the prices of these fuels over the past three years. We have data from fleets that utilize propane, compressed natural gas (CNG), liquified natural gas (LNG), and ethanol (aka- E85).

It is noteworthy that the propane prices presented are the public prices, and not the prices that companies are able to negotiate with propane suppliers, which are lower than these data points. The prices of this information are in per gasoline gallon equivalent (GGE), this allows us to compare the energy content of prices of different fuel types more easily as fuel types are sold in differing units and physical forms.

From this information we can see that the fuels with the most stable prices are both CNG and LNG. With average prices fluctuating less than $0.30 over the three years. In contrast, ethanol has the largest change overtime with a sharp increase in 2022. It is interesting to note that national ethanol prices fluctuate at the same rates of gasoline as seen in the following figure.

Additionally, when comparing this information to national averages, we can see that Louisiana’s prices for both types of natural gas are lower. On the other hand, both ethanol and propane prices are higher than the national average.
