In 2020, Louisiana was responsible for 9.5% of domestic natural gas production, beaten only by Texas (23.9%) and Pennsylvania (21.1%). The U.S. also produced 10% more natural gas in 2020 than it consumed.
Natural gas is also the most widely used alternative fuel in Louisiana, accounting for 75% of the greenhouse gas reductions and 92% of the petroleum usage reductions from alt fuel usage in Louisiana Clean Fuels’ territory in 2020. Using natural gas in transportation can both reduce emissions from transportation and support the local economy here in Louisiana.
The majority of hydrogen is currently produced from steam methane reforming (with methane being the primary component of natural gas). As such, Louisiana is also among the top three producers of hydrogen in the U.S.. Though there are currently no hydrogen fueling stations in Louisiana, hydrogen is being used as an alternative fuel in fuel cell electric vehicles in several states, which can result in significant emissions reductions compared to diesel and gasoline vehicles, despite the hydrogen coming from fossil natural gas at steam methane reforming facilities.
