Transportation Data Point (October 2021): Idling Burns 6 Billion Gallons of Fuel Annually

For the average passenger vehicle, idling for more than 10 seconds burns more fuel than shutting the engine off and restarting it. In heavier vehicles, the break-even point will be a little longer depending on the vehicle. Every year, Americans burn more than 6 billion gallons of fuel from idling alone; according to the Alternative Fuel Data Center, approximately half of that is wasted by passenger vehicles.
Idle reduction programs for schools and fleets can both save users money and reduce emissions significantly. It’s estimated that idling in the United States burns over $11 billion, most of which can be easily saved by simply turning the vehicles off when they’re not moving. There are also several technologies that will automatically shut engines off when idling and start up when the driver presses the gas pedal. With more robust, modern engine starters and batteries, cost of the wear and tear of starting engines is easily offset by the cost of idling.
