Transportation Data Point (August 2021): Renewable Natural Gas usage in transportation increased by 25% from 2019 to 2020

According to EPA data, approximately 400 million ethanol gallon equivalents of RNG were produced for transportation in 2019, and this number increased to 500 million gallons in 2020. In 2019, RNG accounted for 39% of all natural gas used in transportation, and that proportion is rapidly increasing over time (in California, over 90% of natural gas used in transportation is renewable natural gas). This huge growth in renewable natural gas usage has similarly large impacts on carbon dioxide emissions from transportation. Renewable natural gas can offer incredible reductions in CO2 emissions and can even be carbon negative, depending on the source of RNG.
