Police Departments Are Going Electric

Police departments throughout the U.S. are learning the benefits of electric vehicles! Many departments are investing in EVs for their police force, with Tesla being a popular option for replacing traditional police vehicles. Between fuel and maintenance cost savings and emissions reduction benefits, EVs are charging their way into police forces across the country.
The Bargersville PD in Indiana was one of the first departments to electrify with their purchase of a Tesla Model 3 in August 2019. Since then, they've saved more than $6,000 in the first year of the vehicle's addition and have added three more Teslas to the force. Though the Model 3s are more expensive than the police vehicles they're replacing, the department estimates that each EV will save them $38,000 over six years - the usual lifespan for police vehicles - for a total of $152,000. Indiana isn't the only state getting in on the electrification action; California and New York are both seeing multiple police departments switch to electric police vehicles.
The Seaside, California police department has replaced two of their police vehicles with Tesla Model Ys in addition to adding three Ford Hybrids to their fleet. The department says that the Teslas will offer better handling and performance in wet conditions in addition to lowering the department's emissions. Read More>>>>
In 2019, the Fremont, California police department started a one-year Electric Patrol Vehicle Pilot Program to test the addition of a Tesla Model S to its fleet. The program concluded in November of 2020 with the department's captain stating, "With an average of 27 fewer days of downtime per year, a savings of $2,147 in the total annual cost of energy/fuel, maintenance, and repair, and no operational carbon dioxide emissions, the pilot program results have prompted Fremont PD to move forward with plans to expand its fleet of electric patrol vehicle alternatives." In New York, the Hastings-On-Hudson Police Department has deployed a Tesla Model Y as part of their police fleet. The department believes the Tesla will save them $8,525 in fuel costs over 5 years. Read More>>>>
The Yonkers Police Department in New York has also recently added a Tesla Model 3 to its fleet, citing the various benefits (speed, computer system, all-wheel drive) and a calculated 15-20% savings on fuel costs as its reasons for the switch to electric. The department plans to add more electric vehicles to its fleet in the future. Read More>>>>
